Claims

The basis for filing an application that allows for the determination of the person entitled to the registration of the patent being granted. The most important part in any patent application that compounds the scope of protection that the application will be appealing for.

Claims are the basis on which the patent offices will be checking the previous application that have the similar claims and use it to disqualify the present application as its already existing.

There are Independent claims and Dependent claims ,and there are various other types of claim, according to their ways of claiming things.
